The Writers' Society

Club Officers

Sonya has a Bachelor's Degree in English/Writing from Park University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She was chosen to speak on her essay, "Realizing Home," at the Sigma Tau Delta Conference in New Orleans (2012), and  won the Mary Barlow Award for Outstanding Student Writing (2013), as well as the First Place Poetry Prize for "Trampled Souls" (2013). Sonya's also been published in "The Spectrum," "The Scribe," and "Voice of the Woods."  She's currently seeking a second Associate's degree and hopes to "find herself." By the looks of it, she's gotten lost somewhere in the nether regions of her mind.

Joni Lunde, Vice President

The Writers' Society was one girl's dream, conceived in the late summer of 2013.

Over time, and with the right mix of Officers, the club finally found it's footing during the fall of 2013. In the beginning, the club existed on five lone members. Now, the membership has grown exponentially, filling the Writers' Room with the beautiful sounds of laughter and life.

Our mission is to engender an atmosphere of community for students who seek expression through all forms of creativity and writing, and to foster the richness of expression, awareness, and knowledge by hosting events, fundraisers, seminars, and other activities.

In other words, here, there's no judgment. There are no labels to live up to or run away from. We won't turn you away or try to make you something that you're not. We embrace uniqueness, love of reading, writing, and creativity. We will celebrate you. The Writers' Society is a completely safe place for you to find yourself, express yourself, and to dare to be whomever you want to be.

Welcome home.

Erin Harrell, Secretary/Fun Maestro

Sonya Dunham, President

Erin is in her first year of college and is going for her Associates in Arts. She hopes to transfer to Park University to obtain her Bachelors in Radio Broadcasting. She spoke publicly as a hobby and for events all throughout high school, and even received national achievement awards for her accomplishments, one of which being sent to Washington D.C. to speak. Erin never received her Hogwarts letter as a child, and has remained bitter ever since. She hopes that in her future she may be able to simply walk into Mordor, or even visit the great lands of Westeros.

After some time away, Joni is coming back to school to finish her Associates in Arts at Maple Woods. She hopes to continue her education at either Park University or UMKC, earning a Bachelor's in Communications. Joni received various awards during high school and has published "Dear You" in the Maple Woods' 'zine, "Voice of the Woods." After obtaining her Bachelor's degree, she hopes to work for a magazine or newspaper. Ultimately, her goal is to write novels.
